What is the influenza vaccine?
The influenza vaccine used in Thailand is made from dead viruses. It is an injectable vaccine. It is designed to protect against the three or four influenza strains that global influenza surveillance agencies recommend as the most prevalent strains in a given year.
Getting a flu shot can boost immunity against the flu strains that may be prevalent that season, so people who get it are less likely to have complications.
How is it given?
It is usually given in the upper arm, but in infants and young children, it is given in the thigh. It can be given subcutaneously in people aged 18 to 64.
For children under the age of eight, two doses are recommended for the first year, spaced one month apart.
