About This Service
Shingles (Herpes Zoster) is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. Most elderly individuals have had chickenpox in childhood, and although they recover, the virus remains dormant in the body. As people age or their immune system weakens, this dormant virus can reactivate, causing shingles.
Individuals at risk for shingles include anyone who has had chickenpox, with the risk increasing in the elderly and those with weakened immune systems. A common complication of shingles is postherpetic neuralgia, a condition characterized by burning pain along the nerve pathways that can last for weeks or even months. This is more frequent and severe in older adults. If shingles affect the eyes, it can lead to vision loss.
The shingles vaccine is recommended for individuals aged 60 and older and involves a single dose, with no need for a booster shot.
