About This Service
Rotavirus is a leading cause of severe diarrhea in children, especially those under the age of 5. Among children hospitalized for diarrhea, more than half are diagnosed with rotavirus-induced diarrhea. This virus can spread year-round but is more prevalent during colder seasons, such as winter. The best way to protect children is to provide immunity through the rotavirus vaccine during infancy.
-The vaccine is highly effective in preventing severe rotavirus infections, with efficacy rates ranging from 85% to 98%. It is also considered very safe, with few side effects, such as mild diarrhea or vomiting, which typically resolve on their own. Although there have been reports of intussusception (a type of bowel obstruction) occurring after the administration of the vaccine, it is very rare—about 1 to 5 cases per 100,000 individuals. This condition is treatable, and when the benefits of the vaccine in preventing severe rotavirus infections are considered, they far outweigh the very low risks of side effects.
-The World Health Organization recommends that all infants receive the rotavirus vaccine starting at 2 months of age, alongside other routine vaccinations. Children who have received the complete rotavirus vaccination series may still experience diarrhea from rotavirus infection, but their symptoms are usually much less severe.
