Facial paralysis is caused by inflammation of the facial nerve (7th cranial nerve) for various reasons. Clinical symptoms include muscle weakness on the face, resulting in tight closing of the eyes and the corners of the mouth tilting downwards to cover the mouth tightly. There is a loss of taste of the tip of the tongue, and in the early stages of the disease there may be pain behind the ear.
