About This Service
Calcium Score or CT Coronary Calcium Score is a test that detects the presence of "calcium deposits in the coronary arteries" using a CT scan (Computed Tomography). The test is used to assess the "degeneration" of the coronary arteries and evaluate the "risk" of developing coronary artery disease in the future, even before any symptoms appear. The calcium deposits in the arteries are a sign of atherosclerosis (the build-up of plaque in the arteries), which increases the likelihood of heart disease or heart attack. This test helps identify individuals at risk and guide preventive measures or treatments.
Steps for Coronary Artery Calcium (CAC) Scan:
- Preparation: The patient will change into a hospital-provided gown and remove glasses, dentures, and any jewelry.
Positioning: The patient will lie flat on the scanning bed, which will gradually move into the scanner. The chest area will align with the scanner’s ring.
- Scanning Process: The scanner will rotate around the patient, emitting X-ray radiation from all angles. The system will process and display images at intervals.
During the Scan: The patient must lie still and breathe normally. In some cases, the doctor may instruct the patient to breathe in, breathe out, or hold their breath for clearer images. Communication will occur via an intercom system.
- Duration: The scan typically takes about 10-20 minutes. The procedure is painless, does not require contrast dye, injections, or any invasive procedure, and does not require an overnight stay in the hospital.
Preparation Before the CAC Scan:
- There is no need to fast before the scan.
- Avoid caffeinated beverages such as tea, coffee, or drinks with caffeine for at least 12 hours before the scan.
- Do not smoke for at least 4 hours prior to the scan.
- Avoid medications that may stimulate the heart or increase the heart rate.
