It is one of the long-standing therapies in traditional Chinese medicine, which has been recorded since ancient times, originating more than 2,000 years ago. In the era when humans relied on fire, people knew how to use fire to keep warm when they felt cold or sick, and accidentally discovered that being burned or the heat from fire could relieve the pain from certain diseases.
The use of Aijiu began with the discovery that “Aiye” 艾叶 or Chinese herbal plants, when burned, would give off heat that could heal the body.
It was believed that the heat from burning would stimulate the flow of Qi (气) and balance Yin and Yang (阴阳).
This treatment method was recorded in many Chinese medical books, such as “Huangdi Nei Jing” (黄帝内经), which is the most influential ancient medical book in traditional Chinese medicine. In this book, it mentioned moxibustion as an effective method for treating diseases caused by cold and Yang deficiency.
Later, the famous doctor Sun Simiao (孙思邈), during the Tang Dynasty, attached great importance to the use of Aijiu.
And he used this method in his writings and treatments at that time. This has made this treatment method popular and an important part of traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. Today, Ai Jiu or fumigation is not only popular in China, but also in countries all over the world, especially in Asia, such as Japan, Korea, and Vietnam.
