Hepatitis A Disease
Hepatitis A is caused by the hepatitis A virus, transmitted through consuming contaminated food and water. Symptoms include loss of appetite, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, pain in the right ribcage, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), and liver failure. Once infected, patients usually recover fully and develop immunity to the disease. It does not lead to chronic hepatitis, unlike hepatitis B.
Hepatitis A Vaccine
The hepatitis A vaccine is made from inactivated hepatitis A virus. It is effective and safe, administered via intramuscular injection in two doses, 6-12 months apart.
Who "should" receive the hepatitis A vaccine?
- Those who do not have immunity to the disease.
- Children aged 1 year and older.
- People in high-risk occupations for contracting and spreading the disease, such as food handlers, childcare workers, military personnel, and healthcare workers.
- Travelers visiting endemic areas such as Central and South America, the Caribbean, Asia (excluding Japan),Africa, and Eastern Europe. The vaccine should be given at least one month before travel.
- Individuals with chronic liver diseases, such as hepatitis B or those who consume alcohol excessively.
- Men who have sex with men.
- People who use illicit drugs.
- Close contacts of infected individuals.
- People with hemophilia.
Who "should not" receive the hepatitis A vaccine?
- Those with a history of severe allergic reactions to a previous hepatitis A vaccine dose or its components.
- Individuals with high fever or acute illness should postpone the vaccination until recovery.
- People with minor colds without fever can still receive the vaccine.
